When you think of things to do in Florida, I’m sure museums aren’t the first activity that springs to mind. However, the state has some fantastic museums throughout its various cities, and they make the perfect diversion from the theme parks and beaches that Florida is famous for. Today I’m going to share with you some of my favorite museums in the state, which I believe are hidden treasures that visitors will enjoy exploring.
The Dali Museum, St. Petersburg
One of the top museums in the state, this museum in St. Petersburg celebrates the surrealist painter’s artwork and houses the biggest collection of his work outside of his home country of Spain. There are incredible photo opportunities throughout the museum, and you’ll appreciate the beauty and colors of the artwork here.
Orlando Science Center, Orlando
If you need to have a day away from the theme parks, this is the best museum around for kids and teens to explore. You’ll spend many hours here enjoying the hands-on exhibits, and kids will have fun while learning more about science and technology.
Pérez Art Museum, Miami
Showcasing artwork from the 20th and 21st Century, this museum focuses on modern and contemporary artwork. You will appreciate the museum’s unique architecture and beautiful gardens, and you can enjoy a guided tour of the facilities in English or Spanish. On Thursday nights, the museum stays open until 9 pm, so it’s perfect for after a day at the beach or for a unique date night.
Ernest Hemingway Museum, Key West
This is one of the top attractions in Key West and offers you the chance to explore Ernest Hemingway’s home where he lived from 1931 until his death. Located in the heart of Old Town Key West, you’ll enjoy meeting the forty cats who live on the grounds here and seeing the home’s beautiful gardens.
John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota
This attraction houses many different things to see within its grounds, so you’ll find something for all of the family. The highlight here is the art museum, which features twenty-one different galleries. On the site, there is also a circus museum, railroad car and stunning gardens. The pink architecture of the building is incredible to witness, and unlike anything you will have seen before if you are from out of state.
Indian Temple Mound Museum, Fort Walton Beach
If you are interested in learning about Florida before it became the tourist hotspot it is today, step back in time 12,000 years at this museum. It shares the history of Florida’s Native Americans with exhibits and artifacts. There’s plenty to explore in the surrounding area with the Camp Walton Schoolhouse Museum and the Civil War Exhibit Building nearby.
Florida has some amazing museums that help to transport you back in time or to another world. The opportunities to enjoy a spot of culture here are endless, and these museums offer a good escape from the crowds and heat.
Are looking for a different activity to enjoy after busy days of visiting museums? How about fishing in Cape Coral Florida? If you are looking for another way to escape the crowds on your next trip, head out on a half- or full-day inshore fishing charter with Blue Line Fishing LLC. This will allow you to admire the marine life that calls Florida home from a different angle.
